Fat Graft Q & A

What is a fat graft?

Transferring fat from one part of the body to enhance another is known as a fat graft. Fat grafting has actually been used for over 100 years to fill in hollow cheeks, scars, or sunken eyes. Fat grafts have recently been gaining in popularity as an alternative to artificial implants in other areas of the body. Since fat grafts are the transfer of your own fat cells from one part of your body to another, the risk of allergic reaction or rejection is minimal.

What is the procedure for fat grafts?

Transferring fat from one part of your body to another involves two separate procedures. Typically, the fat cells are harvested from the donor area via liposuction and then injected into the desired area. Often the donor area is the abdomen or thighs.

The fat can be transferred to your face, hands, buttocks, or any other area you’d like to augment. However, breasts are not an optimal site for this type of procedure, as the amount of fat needed to augment breasts would require multiple surgeries and a more extensive amount of fat cells.

Depending on the areas requiring liposuction and injections, Dr. Colon may perform fat grafts under “twilight sedation.” This means that you are sedated, numb, and awake during the procedures. Dr. Colon determines the best options for your needs and discusses them with you in detail before performing any type of fat grafting procedures.

What is the recovery time from a fat graft?

Since fat grafting is a cosmetic surgery, there is recovery time afterwards. The time needed to recover depends on how much liposuction you require and size of the areas treated. Dr. Colon and her experienced medical team explain the recovery process and any care instructions or downtime so you can plan ahead.

Immediately following the surgery, the treated areas may be red and swollen, but this should subside in a few days. After two or three days, Dr. Colon removes your bandages and examines the areas to make sure you are healing properly. You may need to avoid some activities for two or three weeks as your body gradually heals itself.

Dr. Colon invites you to call the office or go online to schedule a consultation so you can discuss the many options and advantages of fat graft procedures.
